Two dogs can both own a bed labeled "orthopedic," and one will actually get pressure relief while the other sinks straight through to the floor. The difference usually comes down to two things buyers skip: getting the size right and understanding what's actually inside the foam. Neither is complicated once you know what to look for, but both get glossed over in most buying guides in favor of just picking a bed off a list.

Measure Your Dog Before You Measure the Bed

Bed listings size by "breed weight range," which is a rough shortcut, not a measurement. A 45 lb bulldog and a 45 lb greyhound have completely different footprints when lying stretched out, and a bed sized only by weight can leave one of them with paws and head hanging off the edge, which defeats the point of a supportive bed.

To measure your dog properly:

  • Wait until they're asleep and fully stretched out, not curled in a ball. Curled measurements will undersize the bed.

  • Measure nose to base of tail, then add the length of their legs if they sleep sprawled rather than tucked.

  • Measure widest point, usually shoulders or hips, while lying on their side.

  • Add 6-10 inches to both dimensions. A dog that fits their body exactly on a bed with no margin will still hang limbs off the side; the added margin is what lets them fully relax into a stretched position without sliding onto hard flooring.
  • If your dog sleeps in more than one position, curled some nights, sprawled others, size for the sprawled measurement. It's easier for a dog to curl up on a bed with room to spare than to stretch out on one that's too small.

    A Note on Bolstered Beds

    Raised-edge (bolstered) beds effectively shrink the usable flat sleeping surface, since the bolster itself takes up several inches on each side. When comparing a bolstered bed to a flat mattress-style bed, check the interior sleeping dimensions listed by the manufacturer, not just the overall bed footprint, they're often listed separately and the gap between them can be surprising.

    What "Orthopedic Foam" Actually Means

    "Orthopedic" isn't a regulated term, so it gets applied loosely. What actually determines whether a bed supports joints is the foam type and density underneath the cover. The main types you'll encounter:

    High-density polyurethane foam, a firmer, more structural foam that resists compressing all the way through. This is what does most of the actual weight-bearing work in a genuinely supportive bed, and it's usually the base layer even in beds marketed around memory foam.

    Memory foam (viscoelastic foam), the slower-recovery foam that molds to body shape and redistributes pressure across joints and pressure points rather than concentrating it. It's usually layered on top of a high-density base, not used alone, memory foam by itself, without a firm support layer underneath, will bottom out under a dog's weight and stop doing its job.

    Gel-infused foam, memory foam with gel beads or a gel layer added, mainly to pull heat away from the body so the bed sleeps cooler. It doesn't change the support characteristics much on its own; think of it as a comfort feature layered onto whichever foam type it's infused into.

    Convoluted ("egg crate") foam, the ridged, waffle-textured foam sometimes used as a topper. It's lightweight and adds some airflow, but it's the least supportive option here and isn't something to rely on as the primary layer for a dog with real joint issues.

    Reading Foam Density and ILD Ratings

    Better manufacturers list two numbers, though not all do:

    • Density, measured in pounds per cubic foot (PCF). Higher density foam holds its shape longer and resists bottoming out under sustained weight, this matters more for larger or heavier dogs, and for beds that will be slept on daily rather than occasionally.
    • ILD (Indentation Load Deflection), a measure of firmness, roughly, how much force it takes to compress the foam by a set amount. Higher ILD means a firmer feel. There's no universal standard dictating exact ILD numbers by dog weight, and brands don't test this the way human mattress makers do, so treat published ILD figures as a rough comparison between products from the same manufacturer rather than an exact spec you can shop against across brands.

    Matching Firmness to Weight (General Guidance, Not a Formula)

    There's no precise, universally agreed formula linking a dog's weight in pounds to a specific foam density, beds aren't regulated or tested that way, and any chart claiming an exact number is presenting more precision than the industry actually supports. What holds up as a general principle instead:

    • Smaller and lighter dogs put less sustained load through the foam, so a thinner layer of medium-density foam can still feel supportive without bottoming out.
    • Larger and heavier dogs, especially over roughly 50-60 lbs, need enough total foam thickness and a firm enough base layer that their heaviest points (hips, shoulders) don't compress all the way through to the floor of the bed frame or the actual floor underneath. A bed that visibly flattens under your dog within a few minutes, check by pressing a hand into it near their weight-bearing points, isn't giving real support regardless of what the label says.
    • Total bed thickness matters as much as foam type. A 2-inch memory foam layer over a thin base is not doing the same job as 4+ inches of layered support foam, even if both are technically "memory foam" beds.
    The most reliable check you can do yourself, after measuring for size: press your palm firmly into the bed where your dog's hip or shoulder would rest. If your hand meets the floor or frame through the foam with moderate pressure, that bed isn't going to hold up under a resting dog's full body weight for hours at a time.

    Putting It Together

    Before buying, you should have: your dog's stretched-out length and width plus margin, and a rough sense of whether the bed's foam layering (not just its label) matches their weight. A correctly sized bed with mediocre foam will still slide your dog toward the floor over time; a great foam stack in the wrong size will leave limbs unsupported off the edge. Getting both right is what separates a bed that actually functions as orthopedic support from one that's just called that on the box.

    Generally yes. An oversized bed just gives extra room to stretch or shift position; an undersized one forces your dog to curl unnaturally or hang limbs off the edge, which works against the point of a supportive surface. Sizing up is the safer default when you're between two listed sizes.

    Not automatically, thickness only helps if the foam underneath is dense enough to actually hold that thickness under sustained weight. A thick layer of low-density foam can still compress flat. Total support comes from the combination of thickness and density together, not thickness alone.

    Foam that seems supportive under a quick hand-press can still compress differently under hours of continuous weight from a sleeping dog, especially concentrated at hip and shoulder points. This is common with beds that rely on a thin memory foam layer over a soft or thin base rather than a genuine high-density support layer.
