"Chew-proof" and "waterproof" are two of the most overused words in the dog bed aisle, and neither one is a regulated term. A listing can call a bed indestructible without any testing standard behind that claim. The difference between a bed that actually holds up and one that doesn't usually comes down to a handful of construction details that rarely make it into the bullet points, the fabric weave, how the seams are sewn, and whether the zipper is exposed or covered. Here's what to actually check.
Fabric, Denier and Weave Matter More Than the Material Name
Many chew-resistant covers are made from nylon or polyester, but the material name alone tells you very little. What matters is the denier, a measure of fiber thickness, and the weave.
- Ballistic nylon is woven from thick, tightly packed fibers and is one of the more puncture-resistant fabrics used in dog gear, originally developed for flak jackets. Look for denier ratings in the 900-1680 range on beds marketed as heavy-duty; lower numbers mean a thinner, easier-to-puncture fabric even if the listing still says "ballistic."
- Ripstop fabric is woven with a reinforcing grid pattern (visible as a faint checkerboard texture) so that if a tooth does puncture the surface, the tear stops at the next reinforcing thread instead of running the length of the panel. This is a genuinely useful feature for dogs that scratch or nip rather than sustained-chew.
- Cordura is a branded, abrasion-resistant fabric often used on the underside of outdoor or elevated beds rather than the sleeping surface, since its main strength is resisting wear from dragging and ground contact rather than bite puncture.
Seams and Stitching, Where Beds Actually Fail
Fabric strength is only half the equation, most bed failures start at a seam, not in the middle of a fabric panel, because stitching holes are a pre-weakened line the dog's teeth can catch on.
- Double or triple box-stitching reinforces the seam with multiple parallel stitch lines instead of one, so if one line of thread fails the seam doesn't immediately open.
- French seams (where the raw fabric edge is folded inside the seam rather than left exposed) give a dog nothing to grab onto and start unraveling, unlike an exposed overlock edge.
- Bound or piped edges, a fabric strip sewn over the seam line, add a layer a dog has to chew through before reaching the actual seam thread underneath.
Zippers, The Most Common Weak Point
Zippers are frequently the first thing a determined chewer finds, because the metal or plastic teeth and the fabric pull tab both stand slightly proud of the surface and invite mouthing. A few design choices make a real difference:
- Covered or flapped zippers, where a fabric flap sewn over the top hides the zipper track, remove the visual and tactile target entirely.
- Recessed zippers sit in a channel below the surrounding fabric rather than sitting on top of it.
- Metal zipper pulls resist chewing better than plastic pulls, which can crack or be bitten off entirely, sometimes creating a small swallowable piece.
Waterproofing, TPU Lining vs. a Water-Resistant Coating
"Waterproof" beds fall into two very different categories, and the difference matters if you're dealing with an incontinent senior, a puppy in house-training, or an outdoor dog.
- TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) lining is a separate laminated layer bonded beneath the fabric, forming an actual barrier that liquid cannot pass through even under sustained contact. This is the standard to look for if accidents are a regular occurrence.
- DWR (durable water repellent) coatings are sprayed or applied finishes on the fabric surface that cause water to bead and roll off for light exposure, but they wear down with washing and won't hold up to a dog lying in a puddle of urine for an extended period. Many beds marketed as "water-resistant" (a meaningfully weaker claim than waterproof) rely on this.
The Stuffing Problem No Fabric Solves
Even the toughest chew-resistant shell doesn't remove the risk hiding underneath it: foam and polyfill stuffing. If a dog does eventually breach the cover, and with unsupervised access, determined chewers usually will eventually find a way in, the stuffing itself becomes a hazard. Ingested foam or fiberfill can cause an intestinal blockage, which is a veterinary emergency, not something to wait out at home. This is exactly why elevated, stuffing-free cots exist as a category: they remove the ingestible filling entirely rather than trying to out-engineer the chewing.

No fabric, seam, or zipper combination makes a bed genuinely indestructible, that word shows up on listings as a sales claim, not a lab result. What good construction does is buy meaningfully more time and resistance, which matters most for moderate chewers and dogs who scratch, dig, or nip rather than sustain focused destruction. For a dog that has already destroyed several beds, no cover-and-stuffing design fully solves the problem, and supervision or a stuffing-free elevated cot remains the safer choice.
