Walk down the dental-treat aisle and nearly every bag claims to fight plaque, control tartar, or freshen breath. Almost none of those claims have been checked by anyone outside the company selling the product. Here's what's actually happening in a dog's mouth when they chew, what the one credible seal in this category really certifies, and where the honest ceiling sits on what any chew, VOHC-accepted or not, can realistically do.
How Plaque Becomes Tartar
Plaque starts forming within hours of a meal, as bacteria in saliva combine with food debris to build a soft, sticky film across the tooth surface. Left alone, that film keeps building and, without daily disruption, begins mineralizing with calcium and phosphate salts from saliva into a hard, cement-like deposit called tartar or calculus. Once plaque has hardened into tartar, a chew cannot remove it. Tartar bonds to the enamel and only comes off with a scaler, either by a vet under anesthesia or, less thoroughly, careful hand-scaling most owners aren't equipped to do safely. This is the single most important thing to understand about dental chews: their entire job is intercepting plaque before it mineralizes. Once tartar is present, a chew is managing a mouth that already needs a professional cleaning, not fixing the problem.
The Mechanism, Mostly Mechanical, Sometimes Chemical
Most dental chews work through simple mechanical abrasion. Texture, whether ridges, nubs, or a fibrous, slightly resistant matrix, drags across the tooth's outer surface as the dog gnaws, physically scraping off the soft plaque film before it has a chance to harden. Chew time and texture matter more than flavor or shape here: a chew that disappears in eight seconds barely touches the teeth, while one that takes several minutes of sustained gnawing does real mechanical work.
A smaller number of chews add a second layer: a chemical or enzymatic component. Delmopinol-coated chews are designed to interfere with the bacterial biofilm plaque grows from, making it harder for the film to stick and rebuild. Enzyme systems built around natural antibacterial compounds work on a similar principle, supporting the mouth's own defenses against the bacteria that seed plaque. These additions are a genuine second mode of action, not just marketing dressing, but they supplement the scrubbing rather than replace it.
What the VOHC Seal Actually Certifies
The Veterinary Oral Health Council is an independent body, not affiliated with any chew manufacturer, that reviews clinical trial data submitted by companies wanting to use a plaque or tartar claim. To earn acceptance, a manufacturer runs controlled trials comparing dogs given the product against a control group that isn't, using standardized scoring of plaque and tartar coverage on the teeth, and has to show a statistically meaningful reduction that holds up to independent review. Products can be accepted for tartar control, for plaque control, or both. Plaque acceptance is the harder standard to meet, since plaque is more variable and has to be caught before it mineralizes.
This matters because VOHC acceptance is currently the only external check in the entire dental-chew category. Everything else on a label, phrases like "clinically proven" or "vet recommended," is written by the company selling the product, with no outside body verifying it. A chew without the VOHC seal isn't automatically useless; plenty of unaccepted chews still provide real mechanical scrubbing. But the seal is the only claim on the package you don't have to take purely on faith.
What "Working" Actually Looks Like
Even a well-designed, VOHC-accepted chew has a defined and fairly narrow job. It reduces plaque and tartar buildup mainly on the crown surfaces the chew's texture actually contacts during normal chewing, largely the back teeth used for grinding. It does comparatively little along the gumline, on the small incisors at the front of the mouth, or on the inside surfaces facing the tongue, which is exactly where a meaningful share of periodontal disease actually starts. A chew is also only working in real time; it does nothing for tartar that's already hardened from months or years without adequate care, and it does not treat gum disease that has already set in.
Where This Leaves Brushing and Vet Cleanings
None of this makes chews pointless. A daily VOHC-accepted chew, used consistently, is a genuinely low-effort way to slow how fast plaque accumulates between more thorough interventions. But it sits underneath, not instead of, the two things that actually control dental disease long-term. Daily brushing with a dog-specific enzymatic toothpaste is the only home method that reliably reaches the gumline where disease starts, because a toothbrush goes exactly where you aim it and a chew only cleans wherever the dog happens to bite. And a professional cleaning under anesthesia, with a full mouth exam and dental X-rays, is the only way to deal with tartar that's already formed and to catch disease hiding below the gumline that neither a chew nor a toothbrush can reach. Treat a good chew as the easy daily layer that buys time between those two things, not as a replacement for either one.
