What actually happens inside a parked car

A closed car functions like a greenhouse: sunlight passes through the glass, warms the interior surfaces, and the resulting heat has nowhere efficient to escape. On a 70°F (21°C) day, a temperature that doesn't feel dangerous at all outside, the interior of a parked car can climb past 100°F (38°C) within about 20 to 30 minutes, and keeps rising from there. On genuinely hot days, that climb happens faster and reaches far more extreme numbers.

Cracking the windows barely changes this. Studies on parked-car heat consistently find that a few inches of window gap makes only a marginal difference to how fast or how high the interior temperature rises, nowhere near enough to make it safe. Ice-cold water and ice packs directly on the skin can actually be counterproductive, constricting blood vessels near the surface and trapping heat rather than releasing it. Cold-weather car risk is real too, just slower

Cold poses a different but genuine risk. A parked car in freezing weather loses its heat quickly once the engine is off, and a dog left in a cold car, particularly a small, short-coated, senior, or young dog, can develop hypothermia over a longer but still meaningful window. Watch for shivering that doesn't stop, lethargy, pale or bluish gums, and a body that feels cold to the touch. Frostbite is also a risk during any time outdoors in freezing temperatures, most commonly on ears, paw pads, and tails, areas with less fur and blood flow protection.

These are general guidelines, not precise cutoffs, a dog's coat, size, age, and health all shift the real risk:

  • Above roughly 85-90°F (29-32°C) ambient, exercise and car time should be minimized, especially for flat-faced or heavy-coated breeds, and never combined with a parked, unattended car under any circumstances.
  • Below roughly 20-32°F (−6 to 0°C), short-coated, small, senior, or young dogs need protective layers and shortened outdoor time; a dog showing shivering or reluctance to walk should be brought inside.
  • Humidity matters as much as raw temperature in heat, high humidity reduces how effectively panting cools a dog even at moderate air temperatures.

Cooling and warming strategies that actually work while traveling

For heat: travel during cooler parts of the day, run air conditioning continuously while the dog is in the vehicle (with the engine on and a person present, not idling with the dog alone), use a cooling mat or a damp towel on the belly, keep the car's interior temperature checked with a thermometer rather than assumption, and never assume "just a few minutes" is safe.

For cold: use a dog coat or jacket for short-coated or small breeds during transit and stops, warm the car cabin before loading the dog in freezing weather, limit time outside during transfers, and dry off wet paws and fur promptly since damp fur loses heat faster than dry fur.

Ventilation isn't a substitute for climate control

Cracked windows provide airflow but not meaningful temperature control, and airflow alone can't counteract a car heating past 100°F in under half an hour. The only reliable options for a dog traveling in extreme heat or cold are: the dog stays with a person who can run climate control continuously, or the dog isn't left in the vehicle at all during that stop. There isn't a middle option that's actually safe.
