Why this is such a common multi-dog problem
In households with more than one dog, a faster or more food-driven dog finishing its own bowl and moving straight on to a housemate's portion is one of the most common feeding complaints. It's not just a fairness issue, it means the slower or less assertive dog is consistently underfed while the food-driven dog is overeating, which over time affects both dogs' weight and can create tension around mealtimes.
Basic timed feeders don't solve this on their own
A standard automatic feeder that just dispenses food into an open bowl at a set time does nothing to stop a second dog from walking over and finishing what's there, it solves the "when" of feeding, not the "who." If food-stealing is the core problem, a plain timed feeder without an access-control feature isn't going to fix it, regardless of how reliable its schedule is.
Where microchip and RFID feeders actually help
A newer category of feeder pairs with either the dog's existing microchip or a separate RFID tag on the collar, and the feeding bowl's lid only opens when the registered pet approaches, closing again if another animal comes near. This is specifically designed for the food-stealing scenario and is the main reason these more expensive feeders exist, for a single dog on a normal schedule, the microchip-recognition feature adds cost without adding much benefit.
Physical separation is still the simplest fix
Before investing in an RFID feeder, physically separating dogs at mealtimes, different rooms, a baby gate, or crate feeding, solves the same problem for free and is worth trying first, especially if the issue is only mealtimes and not an ongoing resource-guarding concern. An RFID feeder becomes more worthwhile when physical separation isn't practical, such as a household layout that makes closed-door feeding difficult, or when the dogs need to be gradually retrained to associate their own space with their own bowl rather than needing a barrier forever.
What these feeders don't fix
A microchip feeder controls access to food, but it doesn't address resource-guarding behaviour if a food-driven dog reacts aggressively toward another dog approaching its space, that's a training and behaviour issue that a mechanical device can't resolve. If mealtime tension includes growling, snapping, or genuine aggression rather than just one dog finishing food faster, that's worth addressing with a trainer or behaviourist alongside any equipment change.
The practical takeaway
A basic automatic feeder handles timing and portion size but won't stop food-stealing between dogs on its own. A microchip or RFID-enabled feeder is built specifically for that problem and is a reasonable investment if physical separation at mealtimes isn't a workable long-term option in the household.
